Spring is the perfect time to detox.

And you may have already heard many of your family, friends or colleagues talking about going on a detox soon.

Have you every wondered if you need to go on a detox? If so, then let’s start with understanding some basics of detox.

What is a detox?

Detox means removal of toxins from our bodies.

This includes any waste material the body naturally produces as part of the normal cellular functions like metabolism and other functions the organs have.

It also means removal of substances the body deems unworthy to keep like waste products from processed foods, sugars, alcohol, pesticide residues, excess hormones, chemicals etc.

Now, our bodies are naturally equipped to detox themselves. The liver, gallbladder, colon, kidneys, urinary system, lungs, sinuses, skin, sweat glands and lymphatic system are doing just that all day round.

Who needs a detox?

The answer is that it really depends on an individual’s diet, lifestyle and overall health.

But generally speaking, do you suffer from chronic symptoms that seem to have no known cause? Symptoms like:

  • * Fatigue
  • * Headaches
  • * Acne or skin issues
  • * Muscles aches & joint pain
  • * Brain fog
  • * PMS
  • * Menopause symptoms
  • * Anxiety or depression
  • * Insomnia
  • * Constipation
  • * Chronic bad breath
  • * Allergies
  • * Chemical sensitivities, ofcourse
  • * Weight gain

There are so many different ways to detox like water fasting, liquids only, more restrictive diets and even the packaged detoxes available on health food stores full of pills and potions.

So you need to really think of what is the current state of your body is and how deep of a cleanse do you need?

CAUTION: If you are considering a detox, then I highly recommend doing so under the supervision of a certified nutritionist like myself or your trusted health care provider.

There are 2 main reasons for this:

  • – First and foremost, they would be able to help you determine the best way to detox considering your current diet, body and mind’s needs. This way you won’t end up causing nutrient deficiencies, as a detox requires a steady supply of appropriate nutrients to the body during and after the detox. This ignorance is a common problem I see in my nutritional consultation practice, and as a result many people end up feeling worse than when they started off.

  • – Secondly, during a detox, the body releases unwanted toxins into the blood stream to be eliminated from the body. So if you have a poorly functioning liver, kidneys or excretory system & are constipated; your body is unable to expel the toxins they end up circulating in the blood stream. This may lead to rashes, breakouts or other harmful symptoms where you feel worse than you were before!

The whole point of a detox is to refresh the body and rejuvenate it, so that you feel vibrant and drive away sickness.

I also strongly believe in detoxing with REAL FOODS, instead of store bought packaged potions.
